Fisheries Sector

The Fisheries Sector Adaptation Framework aims to strengthen the resilience and sustainability of Malawi’s fisheries and aquatic ecosystems in the face of climate change, habitat degradation, overfishing and increasing pollution pressures. Under the NAP, the sector comprises five strategies and eight actions focused on sustainable fishing, protection and restoration of aquatic habitats, aquaculture development, reduction of pollution, and strengthened fisheries monitoring and regulation. These measures seek to protect livelihoods and food security while maintaining the health and productivity of aquatic ecosystems.

The eight actions include training fishers on appropriate fishing gear and fishing seasons, restoring community fish sanctuaries, developing climate-resilient fishponds, and strengthening monitoring of fish stocks. Key targets include increasing restored sanctuary areas from 50 hectares to at least 2,000 hectares, expanding upstream conservation projects from three to at least 30, and reducing sediment and nutrient runoff by at least 60%. These targets provide measurable milestones for improving the resilience and sustainability of fisheries and aquatic resources.
