Water Sector

Under the NAP, the water sector focuses on strengthening Malawi’s resilience to climate-related water stress, droughts, floods and changing water availability, while improving access to reliable water resources for communities, agriculture and other users. The Water Adaptation Framework comprises 8 strategies and 10 actions addressing rainwater harvesting, irrigation, water and sanitation (WASH), rural water supply, integrated catchment management, medium-scale water storage, flood and drought early warning systems, and strengthening the capacity of water user associations.

The 10 actions are supported by one output, one outcome and one impact indicator each, providing a framework for tracking progress from implementation to longer-term resilience outcomes. Key targets for 2030 include establishing at least 1,500 water-harvesting structures, harvesting 250 million cubic metres of water annually, and increasing irrigated land from approximately 5,000 hectares to 104,000 hectares.
